A part of me
\nis now asleep forever.
\nTo remember water
\none must deal with the desert.
\nThe past is dry and gone.
\nBut among the stones,
\nthe brambles
\nthat cover the gravel,
\nI find the quartz
\nthat twinkles like a star.
\nThe bark of old dogs,
\ntrails becoming highways
\nmade by shovels and footsteps.
\nI know where I came from.<\/p>\n
This is how the world began.
\nNot in Eden,
\nbut among the apples of summer,
\nthe vegetables of a garden,
\na grape arbor
\nfestooned with fruit.
\nWhere my hair grew dark,
\nmy eyes shone
\nwith the pale blue of youth.<\/p>\n
What wakes me now?
\nI don\u2019t know.
\nI shift among shoes of the day,
\npull on my pants,
\nand feel like a stranger
\namong people
\nunaware I love them,
\nand those
\nwho can never be wakened
