Once in the Alps
\nI reached a building
\nthat lived in perpetual winter.
\nAbove the warm gauze of pastures,
\nlittle lakes that spread
\nlike blue cameos.
\nThe Alps are teeth
\nshattered by glaciers
\nand dark, forewarning dreams.<\/p>\n
In the shelter,
\nthe cold was deaf and numbing.
\nThe sky above the terrace
\nwas heavy.
\nWhy had I come there, I wondered.
\nI wanted space,
\nthe sea,
\nthe open shelves of the land
\nwhere life was lush
\nand stumbling over itself.<\/p>\n
But there I was
\nin the Alps
\nas I listened to lessons
\nI must learn about continuing,
\nif I were to live,
\nto be put back to health.
\nA hospital not unlike
\nthe reaches of those mountains.<\/p>\n
Sounds of wind
\nin the oboe of its ridges,
\nwhere I heard
\nfragments of life reaching,
\nputting itself together.
\nA strategy for going
\nbeyond the barrens of catastrophe,
\nfinding a way back to summer,
