{"id":3777,"date":"2015-07-14T01:20:22","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T00:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3777"},"modified":"2015-06-27T18:26:08","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T17:26:08","slug":"finding-eternity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3777","title":{"rendered":"Finding Eternity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrestle with the recreation of my house.<br \/>\nIts dripping faucets, un-puttied panes,<br \/>\nfloors with the skin of old faces,<br \/>\nliver spots, lines, gouges.<br \/>\nBut it is my house.<br \/>\nIts cracked cement,<br \/>\nits unpolished bronze,<br \/>\nits stone steps mottled with lichen.<br \/>\nIt is myself,<br \/>\nand my comrade in arms.<br \/>\nIt reeks of love and arguments,<br \/>\npathless days, boring plainness,<br \/>\nand times when love scattered its bricks,<br \/>\nraised the rafters,<br \/>\nmoved like a new creation into the street,<br \/>\nand down routes where the street<br \/>\nlost itself in a golden web.<\/p>\n<p>Love ruled it,<br \/>\nand tapestries of sheer happiness and children<br \/>\nechoed timelessly into its wood,<br \/>\na patina of silver ghosts,<br \/>\ninterior happiness that would come over me,<br \/>\nor anyone with a wide heart.<br \/>\nSomeone said, this is a happy house,<br \/>\nand I knew it like a canon,<br \/>\nthe spirits that moved here,<br \/>\nthe celebrations, memorials,<br \/>\nbreakfasts in the sun,<br \/>\na carpet of flowers on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>So I wrestle with its recreation,<br \/>\nits repair,<br \/>\nand discover how changeless I am,<br \/>\nhow impossible to change.<br \/>\nHow I go from door to lintel to rafter,<br \/>\nalways the same,<br \/>\nand wonder if I am dead.<br \/>\nIf I am severed from the sky.<br \/>\nIf the sky itself is too low,<br \/>\ntoo small an emptiness.<br \/>\nAnd I know,<br \/>\nwhen I put my hand to the wall,<br \/>\nthat I am discovered.<br \/>\nThat the house is eternal.<br \/>\nI am eternal.<br \/>\nThat we can be a storm,<br \/>\na shadow,<br \/>\ndissolve into dust and cover pyramids<br \/>\nwith our sand.<\/p>\n<p>That I and the house smile at each other,<br \/>\ndaring a move,<br \/>\na step toward the end of time\u2019s oblivion,<br \/>\nand it is impossible.<br \/>\nOur roots grow in the laughter<br \/>\nand sadness of ourselves.<br \/>\nWe keep a happy watch by the street,<br \/>\nshowing,<br \/>\nthis is where Ted lives,<br \/>\nin his house,<br \/>\nlooking at his garden,<br \/>\nlistening to his family come and go.<br \/>\nHe doesn\u2019t change.<br \/>\nHe has found his eternity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrestle with the recreation of my house.
