{"id":3785,"date":"2013-09-19T19:28:12","date_gmt":"2013-09-19T18:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3785"},"modified":"2013-09-20T19:30:48","modified_gmt":"2013-09-20T18:30:48","slug":"homecoming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3785","title":{"rendered":"Homecoming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From where does the bay come<br \/>\nto keep company with my thoughts?<br \/>\nTo the east there is a half-moon shore<br \/>\nof yellow sand,<br \/>\nsaw grass and sheltered marsh,<br \/>\nwhich now, in November, has a calico color,<br \/>\na weave of dry grass and cold water,<br \/>\nclear as a lens.<\/p>\n<p>It is a piece of the old bay,<br \/>\nstill un-trampled, but not safe<br \/>\nfrom the builders and children of children<br \/>\nwho want their place by the bay.<br \/>\nHere the dark rocks are polished by time.<br \/>\nGreen hair covers their faces.<br \/>\nGreen stones are scattered loosely<br \/>\namong the black stones,<br \/>\nand I leave them as they are.<\/p>\n<p>When I was small I threw the stones<br \/>\nfar and further than the horizon.<br \/>\nNow I want them undisturbed,<br \/>\nperhaps as my father saw them,<br \/>\nand my father\u2019s father.<br \/>\nIt is a dream,<br \/>\na trick of the heart,<br \/>\na slow moving tide<br \/>\ninto the vast plateau of the past.<br \/>\nLet them be.<br \/>\nLet the stones lay glistening in the water.<\/p>\n<p>To the west is a resort closed for the season,<br \/>\ngiven over to the gulls and Canadian Geese,<br \/>\nand foxes and rabbits,<br \/>\nmaking their place by the bay.<br \/>\nSnow has not yet fallen.<br \/>\nThe clouds move white and gray<br \/>\nlike great caravans over the water.<br \/>\nHow I love my bay!<br \/>\nHow I feel<br \/>\nin the cold, stinging chill of the water,<br \/>\na sacrament.<\/p>\n<p>Sandusky Bay is a holy place.<br \/>\nIt can never be harmed.<br \/>\nPerhaps the dozers will come.<br \/>\nA city extended into the waves,<br \/>\nthe shore of crescent dreams<br \/>\nbe covered with tar,<br \/>\nthe marsh drained,<br \/>\nthe rabbits and foxes chased into the woods.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps,<br \/>\nin the clearness of fate,<br \/>\nnothing is eternal,<br \/>\nbut it will have served its purpose.<br \/>\nIt is where I live,<br \/>\nwhere a small boy became himself.<br \/>\nAnd I will take it with me unharmed<br \/>\nthrough the ages of my life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From where does the bay come to keep company with my thoughts?
