In another time,
\nanother place,
\nI could have spoken of myself and others
\nas having walls, certainties,
\ndoors to enter and leave,
\ndestinies of discernible proportions.
\nA place, a name, a grave,
\nlitanies of snow and rain.
\nThat is what I know of my ancestors,
\nof their bones,
\nof the axes and flints of their fires.<\/p>\n
And I see their dark faces,
\ntheir eyes reflecting the dragons
\nof wood and coal,
\nburning into the gray ashes of dawn.
\nAnd hear the children held to their breasts
\nbeing told stories of war and the hunt,
\nand lost voyages of no return,
\nand strange shores.
\nBut it was all contained in beginnings and ends,
\nand the ghosts of the world
\ntending the dead,
\ndirecting the living.<\/p>\n
But this time,
\nis the end of time.
\nThis time we corrupt our genes
\nand discover the secrets of God\u2019s diary.
\nWe pound on doors never meant to be ours,
\nand confront angels with our fear,
\nand tell each other,
\nthe fire in our souls
\nhas a place,
\na time never seen or known.<\/p>\n
So I live at the end of history.
\nI watch children
\ndiscovering the rain,
\ntouching the fragrance of flowers,
\nunmindful that it is all over.
\nThat we are leaving our world.
\nWe have unlocked rooms belonging to God,
\nand in our knowledge,
\nplay with a fire never meant to be ours.
\nUnless, unless…
\nthere is a coming, a star, a voice
\ncalling us back,
\ndescribing our place,
\nholding our dreams in Eden, perhaps…
