\na dime for patience.

\nThe things I left behind without goodby,
\nthe necklace of hope
\nI never put around a lover\u2019s neck,
\nthe words that scattered like mice
\nfrom those that needed them.
\nWeigh it out, Mr. Moon.
\nLet the chips fly where they may.<\/p>\n
I have brought boxes of depositions
\nin my defense,
\nand a ring of pure poetry
\nI put on a girl\u2019s hand.
\nI have studied my case
\nand conclude,
\nwhatever you determine,
\nI am guilty of.
\nI had no talent for rules,
\nI preferred wrong as much as right,
\nand I never understood
\nthe great goodness of the world,
\nits innocence and charm,
\nits naked openness.
\nI never understood
\nwhy it stood with me through all seasons,
\ntold me in small ways and large
\nmy life was worthwhile,
\nfull of promise,
\ncapable of storm
\nand the making of cups and bowls.<\/p>\n
And I plead guilty that I said no prayers
\nfor all the shapes and colors,
\nand immaculate faces of the world.
\nThat I breathed and ate
\nand ran without thought,
\nuntil now when I wish to say thank you
\nand good-by,
\nmy soul seeks to be worthy
\nof some measure of love,
\nsome expression of gratitude.<\/p>\n
So, Mr. Moon,
\nI plead my case,
\nlooking out the window of my bedroom,
\nseeing all the children of the world
\ngrownup and broken.
\nLove them as much as I was loved.
\nTell our Creator,
\nI never left Him.
\nI ran away with a bushel of love,
\nand came back
