{"id":3833,"date":"2013-10-02T01:00:06","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T00:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3833"},"modified":"2013-10-01T23:30:46","modified_gmt":"2013-10-01T22:30:46","slug":"october-lament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3833","title":{"rendered":"October Lament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have not given up summer.<br \/>\nWhy does the snow,<br \/>\nfall on my green flowers?<br \/>\nWhy does the wind,<br \/>\ncurl like an icy leaf<br \/>\naround my anemones?<br \/>\nThe party is not over.<br \/>\nI did not pray for snow.<br \/>\nSnow to cover the brown wistfulness<br \/>\nof the end.<br \/>\nThe leaving.<br \/>\nTo brighten the gray scud of low clouds.<br \/>\nI am not ready.<br \/>\nThe flowers are not ready.<br \/>\nWe still, like lovers,<br \/>\nenjoy each other.<\/p>\n<p>The sun like a bronze shield<br \/>\nwas still warm on the grass.<br \/>\nSummer still wore its light blouse<br \/>\nof silk wind,<br \/>\nof pure fingers,<br \/>\nand then what happened?<br \/>\nI rise,<br \/>\nand find snow putting lace on the street.<br \/>\nI open the window,<br \/>\nand dead dreams rush in<br \/>\nwith last gasps of perfume,<br \/>\nand I close my eyes,<br \/>\ninhaling the orange, the yellow,<br \/>\nthe red sweetness,<br \/>\nthe humid words of love<br \/>\nfrom the dew,<br \/>\nand know it is over.<\/p>\n<p>The snow is coming,<br \/>\nthe blue twilights,<br \/>\nand brass cymbals of dawn.<br \/>\nThe lounging chair by the door,<br \/>\nwatching the destruction<br \/>\nof all the boxes and baskets of summer.<br \/>\nLoving the fall,<br \/>\nthe early arrival of the snow queen,<br \/>\nbut wanting the summer,<br \/>\nlike a child called in from play.<br \/>\nI am not ready to come in,<br \/>\nto sleep,<br \/>\nto wait all those days for spring.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have not given up summer.
