{"id":3840,"date":"2013-10-04T22:45:16","date_gmt":"2013-10-04T21:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3840"},"modified":"2013-10-04T22:45:16","modified_gmt":"2013-10-04T21:45:16","slug":"extinctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3840","title":{"rendered":"Extinctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have read about extinctions.<br \/>\nHow the plate was wiped clean,<br \/>\nthe wall lost all its graffiti,<br \/>\nthe ocean swallowed all its dreams.<br \/>\nThey say the Earth was visited five times.<br \/>\nThat life began again,<br \/>\nlike five great resolutions,<br \/>\ngot up on its knees<br \/>\nand wept in the ashes<br \/>\nof unfinished stories,<br \/>\nthe scattered remnants of disappearing tribes.<\/p>\n<p>I can see the great tidal basins<br \/>\ncoughing and dry,<br \/>\nthe land hard as adobe,<br \/>\nthe wind like an aimless panther<br \/>\nrunning on the ridge,<br \/>\nthe ochre of its eyes<br \/>\nfor the first time frightened.<br \/>\nSo too,<br \/>\nI have braved extinctions.<br \/>\nThe irreducible loss of a face,<br \/>\na sound that spoke in poetry,<br \/>\na hand that held blessings in my own,<br \/>\nand knew the small extinction<br \/>\nof a larger whole.<\/p>\n<p>So I have read of Earth\u2019s fate,<br \/>\nand its fate to be,<br \/>\nand we are one,<br \/>\nthis old planet and I.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s best perhaps<br \/>\nto buy a doughnut,<br \/>\nhave conversation over coffee,<br \/>\ngreet the sky thoughtfully,<br \/>\nand accept extinction<br \/>\nlike the morning paper.<br \/>\nSometimes it\u2019s late,<br \/>\nbut it comes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have read about extinctions.
