{"id":3846,"date":"2013-10-06T01:00:43","date_gmt":"2013-10-06T00:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3846"},"modified":"2013-10-17T17:35:44","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T16:35:44","slug":"the-day-after-an-atomic-allegory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3846","title":{"rendered":"The Day After:  An Atomic Allegory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The day after all the bombs had fallen,<br \/>\nI took a walk.<br \/>\nThe doughnut shop had doughnuts<br \/>\nand I ordered two,<br \/>\none with frosting,<br \/>\nthe other glazed with atomic dust.<br \/>\nI ate them outside for reassurance.<br \/>\nAll the buildings were standing<br \/>\nand the dust was wafted by the breeze<br \/>\noff the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Normal,<br \/>\neverything was normal.<br \/>\nThe world was still intact.<br \/>\nEven a second doughnut<br \/>\ntasted less radioactive.<br \/>\nIt was an academic exercise,<br \/>\na rhetorical reprieve,<br \/>\na philosophic conundrum,<br \/>\nto contemplate the end of the world,<br \/>\nto see actors shuffle about<br \/>\nlooking for rings<br \/>\nand yesterday\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Everything a junk pile,<br \/>\nnot even rusty yet.<br \/>\nThe fallout drifting like snow<br \/>\nand I sighed in relief,<br \/>\nin contentment.<br \/>\nThe end of the world was easier<br \/>\nthan the middle.<br \/>\nAll\u2019s well with the world I thought,<br \/>\nfeeling the hair stand up on my head,<br \/>\na snake travel up my back.<\/p>\n<p>One device.<br \/>\nOne hydrogen smackola,<br \/>\ncould with its little switches<br \/>\nvaporize a hundred square miles,<br \/>\nrain picnics over the horizon.<br \/>\nBut it didn\u2019t happen.<br \/>\nAll 30,000 of our little brothers<br \/>\nare resting snuggled in their silos,<br \/>\nsecure in their submarines,<br \/>\nlocked in the bay of the bombers,<br \/>\nsecured, fed, sleeping.<br \/>\nAll\u2019s well with the world.<br \/>\nHell picking at the lock.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The day after all the bombs had fallen, I took a walk.
