{"id":3882,"date":"2013-10-17T17:04:18","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T16:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3882"},"modified":"2013-10-17T17:04:18","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T16:04:18","slug":"home-for-the-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3882","title":{"rendered":"Home for the Holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When they tore the house down,<br \/>\ndid the lintels cry out,<br \/>\ncalling for me?<br \/>\nDid the windows,<br \/>\nwhen they fell to the ground, say,<br \/>\nwe have opened our secrets<br \/>\none last time,<br \/>\nopened them to his dreams,<br \/>\nand he is not here.<br \/>\nDid the windows say that?<\/p>\n<p>Did they dream?<br \/>\nDid the rain fall and cover the dust<br \/>\nwith transparent tears?<br \/>\nDid the walls,<br \/>\nthat heard my singing,<br \/>\nhold on to the notes as they disappeared?<br \/>\nBreaking apart like ruined cymbals,<br \/>\nmy voice carrying with a guitar<br \/>\ninto the soft night,<br \/>\nwhere my father still sings.<\/p>\n<p>Did the house forget me<br \/>\nin its exploding anguish?<br \/>\nDid its last words tumble into trucks<br \/>\nnot knowing they had nothing more to say?<br \/>\nThat old house holding the odor<br \/>\nof Sandusky Bay,<br \/>\nfull of train whistles, and soot,<br \/>\napples with their sweet sourness.<\/p>\n<p>Did the house remember me<br \/>\nand know I did not know?<br \/>\nThat its death, its old fires,<br \/>\npassed me in my dreams,<br \/>\nand I saw only the shadow of a storm<br \/>\nas the dozer pushed its walls down,<br \/>\nand scooped up the broken glass and nails<br \/>\nthat held my soul together.<\/p>\n<p>I found it later,<br \/>\nthe ruins,<br \/>\nthe empty space,<br \/>\na few fragments of splinters and paint,<br \/>\nand a wail went up inside me,<br \/>\na quiet shriek in an old man\u2019s heart,<br \/>\nas I sat on the tracks,<br \/>\npushing gravel with my feet,<br \/>\nlistening,<br \/>\nremembering,<br \/>\nthe old house with its torn curtains,<br \/>\ncomforting me as best it could.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When they tore the house down, did the lintels cry out, calling for me?
