I am a life in progress.
\nEven toward the end
\nI\u2019m not sure how to begin.
\nI forget more than I learn,
\nso I have forgotten three lives already,
\nand I\u2019ve made up two,
\nlike bibliography to a soul.
\nWhen it comes down to it,
\nwhen I sit by myself among the bushes,
\nwhen I hide behind a tree,
\nI admit,
\nI\u2019ve figured nothing out.
\nNot the brightest bulb in the class.<\/p>\n
When the great book was passed,
\nI read it back to front,
\nupside down,
\nand marked everything.
\nNote, I must go back to that passage,
\nI must ask about that,
\nthat\u2019s something worth quoting,
\nthat I don\u2019t get.
\nWhen suddenly
\nmy teacher, the wind,
\nblew the book from my hands,
\nand I lost it down a bluff
\ntoo high to climb,
\ntoo deep to explore,
\nand went without.<\/p>\n
So for many years,
\nI carried a book bag with a rock in it,
\nand made up stories,
\nand gathered in lines of people
\nfor God knows what.
\nBecause life was a great puzzle to me.
\nIt kept whispering to leave the pack,
\ngo off by myself,
\ninvite the wall to sing to me,
\nthe sun to dry my tears,
\nthe moon to gather up my dreams.<\/p>\n
Go with the silence of the river
\nrunning inside me.
\nThe one that had no name
\nbut traveled from forever to forever,
\nand promised me
\nthat my sail was my heart.
\nAnd the life I owned
\nwas shared by the world,
\nthe great shore.
\nAll in progress,
\nall writing poems in the dunes,
\nand not to worry
\nif someone asked how I was doing.
\nOk, I could answer,
\nI\u2019m a life in progress,
