A profession.  A calling.<br \/>\nWhich day did you feel<br \/>\ntired or joyous<br \/>\nas you listened carefully,<br \/>\ngiving shots,<br \/>\nwriting summations,<br \/>\nand diaries of ending<br \/>\nor recovery?<\/p>\n<p>How many years is it?<br \/>\nFor you,<br \/>\nfor every patient?<br \/>\nFor some a century of suffering,<br \/>\na little girl,<br \/>\na little boy,<br \/>\na frightened mother,<br \/>\na man knowing when he closed<br \/>\nhis eyes,<br \/>\nthey would never open.<br \/>\nWhich one of you closed your eyes?<br \/>\nNone.<br \/>\nNone!<br \/>\nWhich one of you bore wounds?<br \/>\nAll of you.<br \/>\nAll of you!<\/p>\n<p>Which of you said,<br \/>\nwhat use?<br \/>\nThen went on because you said,<br \/>\nI must.<br \/>\nI will!<br \/>\nTo understand everything.<br \/>\nAnother day, saying<br \/>\nI am a nurse, healer, comforter,<br \/>\nand servant.<br \/>\nMother, father, grandparent,<br \/>\nalumna, alumnus,<br \/>\namong my kind,<br \/>\nmy friends,<br \/>\ncompanions,<br \/>\nstudents,<br \/>\nmeeting together.<br \/>\nAnd around us<br \/>\nthe crowd we touched in life,<br \/>\ntheir hands now touching us,<br \/>\non the passageway<br \/>\nto God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wish to take passage on the light of your deeds.
