Overnight a minimalist sound
\ncame from the earth.
\nA white toadstool,
\nso ineptly named
\nfor so white a loveliness.
\nThe curve of a soft pearl,
\nsudden snow
\nthat erupted from black humus.
\nA spore exploded into the air
\nlike the beginning of a universe
\nfrom a bottomless center.<\/p>\n
I go to the index of science
\nfor magic,
\nthe meditations of God,
\nthe spiritual essences of stone,
\nthe trembling of lips
\nsaying words like love.
\nAnd there is no definition,
\nno chart of electrons,
\nno relativity of faces,
\nso far away,
\nso different,
\nso independent of death.<\/p>\n
Suddenly,
\na toadstool
\ncurved like a moon,
\na thought expanding
\nfrom the darkness of the earth,
\nindescribably true,
