The match that burned the world
\nstarted with a stone,
\na mysterious tower of chance,
\na molecule in the mind,
\ninfinitesimal flame.
\nA sunbeam talking about itself
\nas it lit tobacco in its pipe.
\nMichael calls it pretend energy
\ninside his plane.
\nThe smoker blowing smoke
\ncalled it a name
\nand kept it to himself.<\/p>\n
But the flame hovered in his sleep
\nand got away,
\nout of its cage of poetry,
\nand now it burns slowly,
\ncreeping into the good and evil
\nof our thoughts.
\nBut for Michael and me,
\npretend energy will do,
\nE = MC2 is strange,
\nstranger than a dragon,
\nand still far away,
\nshining in the heavens
\nwith a million sparks cast off,
\na fire coming for us,
\ninexorable and bright,
