{"id":742,"date":"2010-09-25T20:02:04","date_gmt":"2010-09-25T19:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=742"},"modified":"2010-09-25T20:02:04","modified_gmt":"2010-09-25T19:02:04","slug":"neanderthals-and-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=742","title":{"rendered":"Neanderthals and Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They were scattered to the wind,<br \/>\ncousins of my sapient ancestors.<br \/>\nCould they speak in poetry?<br \/>\nFind signs in the heavens?<br \/>\nI care for the many that made me.<br \/>\nThe joy and misery of my soul<br \/>\nis theirs.<br \/>\nNeanderthal boys looking on mastodons.<br \/>\nSapient boys following them.<br \/>\nSweet faces,<br \/>\ndrawn from the hard surface of earth.<\/p>\n<p>Mothers hiding them in the brush.<br \/>\nFeeding their children<br \/>\nfruit and meat of the seasons.<br \/>\nBeget and beget through eons.<br \/>\nLink by link, a fragile chain<br \/>\nof intelligence and love.<br \/>\nThis hand that writes their poem<br \/>\nis theirs.<br \/>\nThis heart that searches for its place<br \/>\nis theirs.<br \/>\nThis love that shelters who I love<br \/>\nis theirs.<\/p>\n<p>Neanderthals and me,<br \/>\nI have stories to tell<br \/>\naround your fire.<br \/>\nRedemption and terrible wars.<br \/>\nThe sea tide that took your<br \/>\ntribe away.<br \/>\nExtinguished your hearts and hands.<br \/>\nThe dispassion of nature<br \/>\nthat bred us both.<br \/>\nYour journey up to me<br \/>\nwriting down in words<br \/>\nwhat makes us both.<\/p>\n<p>To this unimaginal time,<br \/>\nthis epoch foreign to your eyes.<br \/>\nYour tens of thousands,<br \/>\nwho wander the byways<br \/>\nof my mourning.<br \/>\nI have a place for you<br \/>\ninside me.<br \/>\nAt the edge of shores<br \/>\nhere, and yet to come,<br \/>\nwhere I will whisper<br \/>\npoems to you,<br \/>\nNeanderthal brothers,<br \/>\nsapient family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They were scattered to the wind, cousins of my sapient ancestors.
