She wandered in the Atlantic
\nlike an orphan.
\nTattered clothes of dusty gray,
\nmoaning for its mother.
\nHer breath the sound of a forlorn child,
\ngoing toward the great marshes
\nof Florida.
\nRag torn waif slowly growing
\ninto a weeping maturity.<\/p>\n
An anger at the open loneliness
\nof the heavens,
\nuntil half grown she burst
\non the wall of the land,
\nlashing and heaving,
\nand for a moment holding up her hand,
\nready to sleep on the beaches,
\nfall into the trees of the cities
\nand go forever into the haze.
\nThen pushed by the weight of the north,
\nflung back into the sea,<\/p>\n
Katrina lifted her shutting eyes
\nand fire exploded in their orbs.
\nA monster of hail and wind
\nignited in her heart,
\nas she blew into the Caribbean,
\na great sail of limitless power.
\nAir turned to screaming shrieks of fury.
\nKatrina became a demon,
\na dream,
\na valkyrie released from the dungeon
\nof the sea, the sky,
\nits life rising like a volcano
\non the battered ocean,
\nand the cities of the gulf,
\nhovering in the face of a certain death.<\/p>\n
A fury unknown to the genteel
\nhistories of their harbors.
\nNature, carefully planted,
\ndoomed to destruction,
\nas the waif
\nturned into a revengeful sorcerous.
\nWhile people prayed in beds
\nthat would be no more,
\nand Katrina
\ncrying in her paroxysm of life
\nand showering death,
\nwas replaced by tears
