Voyages

The way we live, you and I,
leaving days unfinished,
asking where we’ve been.
Did we play enough with the children?
Read enough, teach them words?
Say yes to earth, for the first daffodils
we saw this morning?
Rearrange the shelves
instead of adding more?

I feel shyness increase in me day by day.
I understand treasure.
Wonder, have I done enough,
and understand what I give
belongs to Providence?
I grow older taking voyages,
and ask, where have I been,
where will I be tomorrow?
Sometimes when the day seems long
could I save some voyaging for later?

Am I turning into smoke,
starting new fires
with light to give some light
to my dark walls?
So when I go to sleep
I see days like transparencies,
laid each to each,
and see whole lives
in a single glance,
truth beyond becoming.
What we shared with each other.
