Coffee,
the first kiss of breakfast
is a bitter bean,
sweetened by cream and sugar,
but its bitterness
is the true sweet,
the poem of soul.
Chocolate
is a black heart,
bitter beyond bitter,
recovered by gentleness,
a kiss
wild at its center.
And life
sweetest of the sweet
entangling heaven,
entangles hell,
a bitter beyond love’s reaching.
Metaphors
for bitterness inside me,
whose skin
is sensitive to anguish,
being wounded,
if I dare to live
with bitter.
