Olivia

Princess of Savannah sunsets.
Where does the earth end?
The girl did not know.
Planets fell from the Baobab tree.
Stars circumvented the zenith
and seasons brought the perfume
of dry and wet.
Years harvested her dreams.
She brought her sunsets,
her yellow skies,
to the gray and blue of Ohio.
People who lived in a different place.

Teach me, she said, to bake
your cookie bread.
She would barter Africa,
singing, talking,
stories of the grass and wayside
of man’s original house,
in another land
at solstice time.
Where her heart
had no flame,
to lift her wings.
