Someday,
I will go back to the shore
and build sand castles.
I will take a bus, walk,
or as circumstance dictates,
pull the covers over my head,
take a deep breath,
and simply be there.
With my heart and eyes
fashioning the sand,
making trenches and walls and dikes,
removed from the touch
of the water’s fingers,
and build a structure
dampened by the sea.
A house for the soul,
a child’s battlement,
a cottage of last statements
with walls and windows.
As simple as I wish life had been,
as smooth as sand
after stroking by a wave,
like hair brushed smooth,
rinsed by the rain.
