I prayed last night
for the accumulated wreckage
of my life.
For the tired feet that are puzzled.
For the eyes staring into my hands.
For my brothers and sisters
looking into shadows of dissolving dreams.
The old and sick
without the relief of inspiration
and acceptance.
Here, I said to Providence,
do what you can.
Relieve the old and sick
of their fear and pain.
Rewrite fate gently,
that will be coming in the afternoon
of life, for my children
and children’s children.
Let me return a used heart
for what was enjoyed,
for whatever balm it can bring.
And let me build chapels
with altars of faith inside,
where I can.
